ATM burglary crew busted after crashing outside Cook County Jail, but one suspect briefly escaped in a deputy’s squad car

The early morning hours of May 16 saw a chaotic crime spree unfold on the South Side of Chicago, as a group of individuals embarked on a series of brazen burglaries that culminated in a high-speed chase down the Dan Ryan Expressway. Charles Castleberry, Rakan Eid, Jemel Maple, and Lashon Williams found themselves in hot water after their ill-fated decision to target a gas station for a quick score.

The events began at 5:51 a.m. when the crew descended upon the SNK Fuels gas station on West 71st Street. Using stolen Jeeps, they rammed the station wall to gain entry, only to realize they had mistakenly taken a Bitcoin machine instead of the desired ATM. Undeterred, they promptly went back inside, retrieved the ATM, and made off with their loot, leaving behind the stolen ramming vehicle.

Their next stop was the BP station on West 55th Street, where they once again attempted to pry an ATM from the wall. Despite their efforts, the machine proved resistant to their tools, prompting a hasty retreat as law enforcement closed in on their location. A brief chase ensued, culminating in a crash outside the Cook County Jail, where the suspects abandoned their vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

While Eid, Maple, and Williams were swiftly apprehended, Castleberry took a more daring approach by commandeering a Cook County sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car. In a reckless display of speed and evasion tactics, Castleberry raced down the Dan Ryan Expressway at speeds reaching 115 mph, narrowly avoiding capture as he barreled through tollbooth arms and eluded law enforcement.

Ultimately, Castleberry’s wild ride came to an end near 87th and Ingleside, where Illinois State Police deployed spike strips to slow the stolen patrol car. A dramatic PIT maneuver finally brought the vehicle to a halt, leading to Castleberry’s arrest and the recovery of firearms, cash, and incriminating evidence linking the group to the string of burglaries.

The entire ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the risks and consequences associated with criminal behavior, as well as the swift and decisive actions taken by law enforcement to apprehend those responsible. The four individuals now face a litany of charges, including burglary, possession of stolen property, unlawful weapon possession, and aggravated fleeing, underscoring the severity of their actions and the legal repercussions that await them.
