Burglars took $2.5 million in gold from Lincoln Park home — then returned to try it again, prosecutors say

Burglars Steal $2.5 Million Worth of Gold Bars, Coins, and Jewelry from Lincoln Park Home

In a shocking turn of events, burglars managed to steal gold bars, coins, watches, and jewelry worth a staggering $2.5 million from a home in Lincoln Park in November. The homeowner, a 40-year-old woman, returned to her residence on North Lakewood Avenue to find her back door forced open and her valuable possessions missing. The burglars had made away with a safe containing the precious items, leaving the homeowner devastated.

Security footage revealed a white vehicle pulling into the alley behind the home before the break-in. Three individuals were captured on camera entering the residence and carrying out the burglary. Among them was 27-year-old Corey Edwards, who was later identified by Chicago police officers from the surveillance footage.

Months later, in March, Edwards and two accomplices attempted to burglarize the same home again. This time, their plans were foiled as the homeowner was present inside the house. Upon hearing her, the burglars fled the scene, leaving behind a red Chrysler Pacifica with Wisconsin license plates.

Chicago police managed to intercept the Pacifica on the Kennedy Expressway and apprehended Edwards and 32-year-old Marcel Smith. Smith was seen wearing a red glove in the surveillance footage from the attempted burglary, and a red glove was recovered from the van during the police stop.

Edwards, who had a previous conviction for armed robbery, was ordered detained pending trial. His criminal history included a violent mugging incident in the Loop in December 2018, where he and three others pleaded guilty to armed robbery after assaulting a victim and demanding his belongings.

On the other hand, Smith, who was also charged in connection with the March burglary attempt, was released pending trial but failed to appear in court for a scheduled hearing in April. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest.

It’s evident that the brazen actions of these burglars have caused significant distress to the victims, and the authorities are working diligently to bring them to justice.
