Connecticut retires Jonquel Jones’ No. 35 jersey in pregame ceremony; she misses game with illness
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Jonquel Jones, the former star player for the Connecticut Sun, was honored on Monday night as her No. 35 jersey was retired in a touching ceremony before the Sun’s game against the New York Liberty.
Jones, who spent six successful seasons with the Sun before joining the New York Liberty in 2023, was visibly emotional as she received a standing ovation from the crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena. In a pregame speech, Jones expressed her gratitude to the organization, the fans, and her teammates for their unwavering support throughout her time in Connecticut.
Unfortunately, Jones was unable to play in the game as she was sidelined due to illness. However, her impact on the Sun franchise was undeniable, as she played a crucial role in leading the team to two WNBA Finals appearances.
Connecticut, which is in its final season in the state before relocating to Houston next year, has planned to honor six former members of the franchise throughout the season. Jones expressed her appreciation for the organization, highlighting the role they played in her development as a player.
Jones was acquired by the Sun in a trade with the Los Angeles Sparks on draft night in 2016, a move that proved to be a game-changer for both teams. She went on to become one of the most dominant players in the league, earning the MVP award in 2021 and leaving a lasting legacy in Connecticut.
Sun president Jen Rizzotti praised Jones for her contributions to the team, stating that retiring her jersey was a fitting tribute to one of the greatest players in franchise history. Jones joins a prestigious group of former Sun players and coaches whose numbers have been raised to the rafters in recognition of their achievements.
In addition to Jones, Connecticut will also honor former players Jasmine Thomas, Alyssa Thomas, Tina Charles, and coaches Curt Miller and Mike Thibault throughout the season. Jones now stands alongside other Connecticut greats in the rafters at Mohegan Sun Arena, solidifying her place in the team’s storied history.
