Democrat Xavier Becerra advances to general election in California governor’s race, AP projects

Democrat Xavier Becerra has emerged victorious in the California gubernatorial race and is set to advance to the general election, according to projections by the Associated Press. With about 66% of the expected vote counted, Becerra, the former secretary of Health and Human Services in the Biden administration, has garnered approximately 26.7% of the vote.

The AP has not yet determined which candidate Becerra will face in the general election. However, Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, follows closely behind with 26.4% of the vote, and Democrat Tom Steyer, an activist and billionaire, trails with 21% of the vote.

California’s non-partisan primaries allow all candidates to be listed on one primary ballot, with the top two candidates advancing to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Becerra expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “We will not be bought. We will not be bullied. And we are never backing down. November, here we come.”

Becerra’s unexpected surge in momentum in recent weeks can be attributed to various factors, including the exit of former Rep. Eric Swalwell from the race amidst allegations of sexual assault. If elected governor, Becerra would make history as the first Latino to win a major party gubernatorial primary in California. His team celebrated the projected win as a breakthrough reflecting the demographic transformation of California and the enduring power of politics rooted in working people and underrepresented communities.

On the campaign trail, Becerra faced scrutiny for his handling of an increase in unaccompanied migrant children during his tenure as HHS secretary. Despite facing criticisms from opponents during debates, Becerra remained resolute in his commitment to his platform. The California gubernatorial primary election has witnessed record-breaking spending, with $327.6 million allocated to ad spending and reservations, with Steyer accounting for 63% of that total sum.

As this story continues to develop, stay tuned for updates on the California gubernatorial race and the upcoming general election.
