Electric bills are rising as the July 4 heat wave arrives. Here’s how to save.
As temperatures soar across the United States during the July 4th weekend, households are bracing for higher electric bills. The National Energy Assistance Directors Association projects a 10.5% increase in cooling costs this summer compared to last year, putting a strain on many Americans who are already facing rising electricity prices.
The surge in electricity costs can be attributed to various factors such as data center energy consumption, higher national gas prices, and necessary repairs to the electric grid. As a result, many people are left with the difficult decision of either cranking up the air conditioning to stay cool or trying to keep their utility bills in check.
According to energy economist Mark Wolfe, the executive director of NEADA, there are ways to balance the use of air conditioning with energy efficiency. One key tip is to gradually raise the thermostat by one degree every couple of days until it reaches a maximum of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Wolfe explains that for every degree the cooling is turned up, there can be a 3% savings on the electric bill.
With temperatures nearing record highs in the Northeast and millions of people under heat alerts, officials are urging residents to set their air conditioners at 78 degrees Fahrenheit to help alleviate pressure on the power grid. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has asked residents to also turn off unused lights and electronic devices and unplug non-essential equipment to conserve energy.
In addition to adjusting the thermostat, other tips for keeping cool while saving on electricity bills include blocking direct sunlight by closing window blinds, shades, or shutters during the hottest times of the day. It’s also important to regularly maintain and repair AC units, as a well-maintained system uses less electricity than one that is neglected. While repairs and replacements may be costly, the savings on electricity bills make it a worthwhile investment.
By following these energy-saving tips and making small adjustments to daily habits, households can stay comfortable during the summer months without breaking the bank. As the cost of electricity continues to rise, it’s essential to be mindful of energy consumption and implement strategies to reduce utility expenses.
