Europe’s far right backs Orbán as Hungary’s coming election puts his brand to the test

BUDAPEST, Hungary — The gathering of more than a dozen European far-right leaders in Budapest on Monday showcased their support for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán, a nationalist leader admired by conservatives in the U.S. and Europe, is facing a crucial election in April that could determine the future of the far-right movement.

Orbán, who reclaimed power in Hungary in 2010, has been a prominent figure in the global far-right long before the rise of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite Orbán’s previous political victories and control over Hungarian institutions, recent polls suggest he is trailing behind a center-right opponent, indicating a potential decline in his influence over the conservative movement.

The assembly in Budapest brought together the Patriots for Europe, a coalition established by Orbán and his far-right allies. Comprising parties from 13 EU countries, the group shares common views on immigration, national sovereignty, and conservative values.

The event featured speeches from prominent far-right leaders like France’s Marine Le Pen, Italy’s Matteo Salvini, and the Netherlands’ Geert Wilders, all voicing their support for Orbán and his party ahead of the upcoming election.

Orbán’s influence extends beyond Europe, with a strong relationship with former U.S. President Trump. The two leaders have publicly endorsed each other, emphasizing shared values of border protection, cultural preservation, and national sovereignty.

The upcoming Hungarian election holds significant implications not only for Orbán’s political future but also for the global far-right movement, which has drawn inspiration from his leadership style and policies.
