Feds arrest man who allegedly sold gun to Old Dominion shooter

Federal authorities have apprehended a Virginia man for allegedly selling a firearm to the former National Guardsman who perpetrated a tragic shooting at Old Dominion University. Kenya Chapman faces charges of false statements and unlawful firearms dealing for selling a Glock 44 .22 caliber gun to Mohamed Jalloh, who had a prior conviction for attempting to support ISIS in 2016. Jalloh, who was incarcerated for this offense, was prohibited from legally purchasing or possessing firearms.

On the day of the incident, Jalloh opened fire on an ROTC class at ODU, resulting in the death of an instructor and injuries to two students. Witnesses reported that Jalloh shouted “Allah Akbar” before commencing the shooting, which was ultimately stopped when other students subdued and killed him.

The FBI is currently investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. Students on the campus described the chaos and fear that ensued as the shooting unfolded in Constant Hall. The community was left in shock and disbelief, with many expressing their concerns and disbelief that such a tragedy could occur on their campus.

New information from a recently unsealed criminal complaint sheds light on Jalloh’s background and activities leading up to the shooting. Jalloh had been taking online classes at ODU and had reported living with his sister in Sterling, Virginia. Surveillance footage showed Jalloh parking his car on campus shortly before the shooting took place.

Jalloh, a former member of the Army National Guard, had served time in prison for his involvement with ISIS. Despite prosecutors recommending a 20-year sentence, he was released in 2024 for completing a substance abuse treatment program. Court records revealed that Jalloh had communicated with an ISIS member and had discussed planning an attack during Ramadan.

The tragic events at Old Dominion University have left the community reeling, with authorities working diligently to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. The investigation continues as the community mourns the loss of life and seeks to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred.
