Former Uvalde school police chief set to appear in court

Former Uvalde school police chief Pete Arredondo is facing a pivotal moment in his criminal trial as the judge overseeing the case considers moving the proceedings out of Uvalde. The trial has been at a standstill due to ongoing civil lawsuits that are seeking to compel agents from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol Tactical Unit to testify in the case.

Arredondo was charged in 2024 with 10 counts of endangering students for allegedly failing to respond promptly to the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. The tragic incident, which occurred on the last day of school on May 24, 2022, resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two teachers.

Prosecutors have accused Arredondo of disregarding his training by waiting 77 minutes before law enforcement agents stormed a classroom and neutralized the gunman. Despite maintaining his innocence and claiming that he was not the incident commander on that fateful day, Arredondo is facing a tough legal battle.

The outcome of Arredondo’s trial is eagerly awaited by the families of the victims, who were left devastated by the acquittal of former school police officer Adrian Gonzales earlier this year. The community is looking to the upcoming trial as a chance for justice to be served.

Arredondo’s attorney, Paul Looney, believes that the case against his client is weaker compared to the failed prosecution of Gonzales. He anticipates a fierce legal battle but remains confident in Arredondo’s defense.

The trial’s future is uncertain as Judge Sid Harle deliberates on whether to move the proceedings out of Uvalde and how to navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing litigation with CBP. Both the Uvalde District Attorney and Arredondo have filed lawsuits to compel CBP agents to cooperate with investigators and potentially testify at trial.

CBP has pushed back against these requests, arguing that the testimony is unnecessary and could compromise national security. The legal wrangling is expected to prolong the trial further, with a resolution possibly months away.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the trial, Friday’s status conference will proceed in Uvalde. Arredondo’s lawyer is optimistic about securing a change of venue, citing the need for an impartial jury given the widespread impact of the shooting on the Uvalde community.

As the legal battle rages on, the quest for justice for the victims and their families continues. The outcome of Arredondo’s trial will not only determine his fate but also provide closure for a community still reeling from the tragic events of that fateful day.
