FTC urged to investigate Roblox for allegedly exposing kids to sex predators, misleading public about safety

Online Safety Groups Call for FTC Investigation into Roblox

Two prominent online safety organizations, Fairplay and the National Center for Online Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), have jointly urged the Federal Trade Commission to launch an investigation into Roblox. They allege that the popular video game platform is enabling sexual predators to groom children and engage in other harmful activities.

Fairplay and NCOSE have raised concerns about Roblox’s voice and text chat features, which they claim are facilitating predation and abuse by allowing adults to contact minors directly. In a disturbing incident, a test account registered to a 5-year-old was granted immediate access to dating, romance, and voice chat experiences connecting them to strangers online.

The safety groups’ 87-page submission to the FTC outlines how Roblox’s design and business model conflict with children’s developmental needs, resulting in real-world harm. They highlight instances of sexual references and racial slurs being used within minutes of entering certain chat experiences on the platform.

The report also accuses Roblox of manipulating children into spending large sums of money through its virtual currency system, Robux, and employing addictive and gambling-like design features to hook young users.

In response, a Roblox spokesperson has denied the allegations, emphasizing the company’s commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for users. They cite safeguards in place to promote a positive experience and fair treatment of players.

Despite recent efforts by Roblox to enhance age restrictions and parental controls, concerns remain about the platform’s vulnerability to harmful contacts and attempts to lure children onto other platforms. The safety advocates urge the FTC to investigate and protect millions of children using Roblox.

Roblox, under the leadership of CEO David Baszucki, has seen significant growth in popularity among children, with millions of daily users under the age of 18. However, this success has attracted scrutiny from regulators and safety advocates, with numerous lawsuits alleging child sexual exploitation.

While Roblox has introduced age-based accounts and improved parental controls, critics argue that loopholes still exist, allowing for potential exploitation. The platform’s use of scarcity marketing tactics to encourage in-game purchases has also come under fire.

Parents have reported unexpected charges amounting to hundreds or thousands of dollars due to their children’s purchases on Roblox. The company maintains that the majority of games are free-to-play, with strict policies against gambling and regulations on in-game purchases.
