Great-grandmother fatally stabbed on Atlanta MARTA carried a knife — but ‘didn’t have time protect herself’
The tragic incident that occurred on an Atlanta train, where a great-grandmother was brutally attacked by an alleged homeless individual, has left the community in shock. Margaret Swan, 66, who was mercilessly butchered, was actually carrying a knife for protection, but unfortunately, she did not have the opportunity to defend herself before the attack took place.
Swan, a retired Atlanta Public Schools parent coordinator, relied on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) for transportation as she never learned to drive. She had been a regular commuter on the train for many years before the horrifying incident that led to her death.
According to her daughter, Shanae Sams, Swan was sitting alone on the train when the alleged assailant, John Elijah Matthews, 25, boarded and attacked her. The surveillance footage captured the chilling moment when Matthews slit Swan’s throat and proceeded to stab her nearly two dozen times. Despite carrying a knife for protection, Swan was unable to defend herself against the sudden and vicious assault.
The helpless victim tried to scream for help and escape, but Matthews held her down and continued to stab her repeatedly until she succumbed to her injuries. The entire ordeal unfolded in front of other passengers who failed to intervene or assist Swan during the attack.
Matthews was apprehended by authorities at the Oakland City Station shortly after the incident, still wielding a knife. The devastated daughter of the victim criticized the lack of security and policing at MARTA stations, especially after the transit system allowed free riders, including the homeless, during renovations.
The senseless killing of Swan has raised concerns about the safety and security of passengers on MARTA trains. This tragic event comes on the heels of another stabbing incident at a MARTA station just a week prior, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures.
MARTA officials have expressed their condolences for the heartbreaking loss and have assured the public that they are committed to protecting riders and employees. The alleged perpetrator, Matthews, who is reportedly homeless, has been charged with felony murder and is currently in custody at Fulton County Jail.
The community is mourning the loss of Margaret Swan, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and security of public transportation systems for all passengers.
