How the Slinky became a classic American toy

America is gearing up to celebrate its 250th anniversary, and as part of the festivities, ABC News is shining a spotlight on one of the most iconic American toys – the Slinky.

The story of the Slinky is a fascinating one, rooted in serendipity. In 1943, Richard T. James, an engineer testing a ship for the United States Navy, accidentally knocked a spring off his desk. To his amazement, the spring started to “walk” on its own, sparking an idea in James’ mind.

Excited by the potential of this newfound discovery, James shared his idea with his wife, Betty James. Together, they decided to turn this spring into a toy. Naming it the “Slinky,” the couple set out to introduce the world to this unique and captivating creation.

Despite initial skepticism about what the toy could actually do, the James family persevered. In 1945, they secured a spot at Gimbel’s Department Store in Philadelphia, where the Slinky quickly captured the attention of shoppers.

Fast forward fifty years, and the Slinky found its way into pop culture history when it made an appearance in the beloved Disney and Pixar film “Toy Story.” The character of Slinky Dog, a stretchy hound made of, you guessed it, a Slinky, became a fan favorite and has since become a recurring character in the franchise.

Christopher James, son of Richard and Betty James, reflected on his mother’s pride in the fact that the Slinky remained an American-made toy, from its invention to production. The Slinky’s enduring appeal and timeless charm have solidified its place in American toy history.

As part of Disney’s contribution to America’s milestone anniversary, the company is hosting a series of special events, including a live concert in Nashville, unique experiences at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, and a two-hour primetime special on ABC. The initiative, “Disney Celebrates America,” will also feature a 24-hour multiplatform broadcast led by David Muir, taking viewers on a journey across all 50 states.

From its humble beginnings as a chance discovery to its status as an enduring symbol of American ingenuity, the Slinky continues to captivate and delight generations of children and adults alike. As we celebrate America’s rich history and cultural heritage, the Slinky stands as a shining example of American innovation and creativity.
