In-N-Out wants to open in a California town that once rejected it
A town in California that previously rejected In-N-Out is now making efforts to bring the popular burger chain back after more than two years.
Back in 2023, Buellton, California, turned down a proposal to open an In-N-Out restaurant, with the City Council voting against it.
Now, negotiations have resumed between the city and the chain, with plans for the restaurant to be built in a new location on McMurray Road, a vacant lot, as reported by SF Gate.
The original proposal back in 2023 involved demolishing a vacant movie theater on McMurray Road to make way for In-N-Out, but concerns about traffic congestion arose.
The City Council initially approved the proposal in October 2023, but further evaluation revealed potential traffic issues, leading to the project being rejected in December 2023.
The decision to reject the project was surprising at the time, as reported by Santa Barbara Independent.
City manager Scott Wolfe mentioned a new location on McMurray Road that is being considered for the restaurant, which would better handle traffic flow.
The new lot is situated north of Rufus T. Buell Drive, near Firestone Walker Brewing Company.

If the plans materialize, it would bridge a significant gap in In-N-Out restaurants along the 101 freeway in that area.
Buellton is currently without an In-N-Out in a considerable distance between the neighboring cities, creating an opportunity for growth in the area.
Pea Soup Andersen’s, a renowned diner in the town, closed in early 2024, leaving a void that In-N-Out could potentially fill while redevelopment plans are in progress.
Efforts are underway to secure a new location for In-N-Out, with a positive outlook on the negotiations, although it’s still early in the process.
The planning commission will review the new proposal on April 2, with hopes of moving the project forward.
In-N-Out’s vice president expressed enthusiasm about the potential new restaurant in Buellton, emphasizing the importance of serving the local community.
