Strikes hit Iran and Tehran targets Israel and Gulf states amid mixed signals over talks to end war
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Airstrikes hit Iran while Iranian missiles and drones targeted Israel’s Tel Aviv and various locations in the Middle East on Tuesday. President Donald Trump stated that the United States was engaged in discussions with Iran to bring an end to the conflict.
Despite the increase in U.S. Marines heading to the Gulf, ongoing exchanges of fire, and Iran’s denial of any ongoing negotiations, the intensity of the war remained high. Trump had recently postponed the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a move that has caused disruptions in international shipping, led to a surge in fuel prices, and posed a threat to the global economy.
While Pakistan offered to host diplomatic talks, Iran remained resolute in its commitment to fight until achieving “complete victory.”
Potential discussions between the U.S. and Iran would face significant challenges, particularly regarding Washington’s objectives related to Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs. Additionally, uncertainty looms over who in Iran’s government holds the authority to engage in negotiations, especially as Israel has vowed to target leaders following previous assassinations.
Iran remains wary of the United States, given past attacks during diplomatic talks under the Trump administration. The prospect of negotiations has been met with skepticism by Iranian officials.
Efforts are underway to build trust between the U.S. and Iran in a bid to halt the fighting and prevent attacks on energy infrastructure in Iran and Gulf Arab countries. The focus is on establishing a mechanism for Iran to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Talks of negotiations briefly impacted oil prices and stock markets, but the respite was short-lived as oil prices surged again amidst the ongoing conflict.
The situation escalated with airstrikes hitting various locations, including Beirut and Tel Aviv, resulting in casualties and damage. The conflict has led to a significant loss of life and displacement in Lebanon, Iran, Israel, and other affected regions.
As tensions continue to rise, the involvement of additional military forces and the threat of further escalation loom large, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict.
