Jake Bennett’s strong start, Masataka Yoshida’s HR off Gerrit Cole carry Red Sox past Yankees 4-1
Jake Bennett’s stellar pitching performance led the Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday. Bennett held the Yankees to just one run in 6 1/3 innings, while Masataka Yoshida kicked off the game with a leadoff home run off Gerrit Cole.
The Red Sox offense was also firing on all cylinders, with Willson Contreras delivering a two-run double and Anthony Seigler hitting his first major league homer. Max Schuemann managed to hit a homer for the Yankees, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Red Sox’s dominance.
Bennett, making his seventh start after recovering from Tommy John surgery, showcased his talent by limiting the Yankees to just three hits before exiting the game in the seventh inning. Aroldis Chapman came in as the closer and secured the win for the Red Sox.
Cole, on the other hand, struggled on the mound, giving up four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Yankees couldn’t muster enough offense to support their ace pitcher, resulting in their sixth loss in eight games.
The Red Sox wasted no time building a lead, scoring in the first three innings for the second consecutive day. Yoshida’s leadoff home run set the tone early, followed by Seigler’s impressive homer into the Green Monster seats. Contreras’ double in the third inning extended the Red Sox’s lead to 4-0.
The stage is now set for the series finale on Sunday night, with Yankees’ Carlos Rodón facing off against Red Sox’s Sonny Gray. The Red Sox will look to continue their winning streak and solidify their dominance over their rivals.
