Jon Hamm Disqualified From Emmy Guest Actor for ‘The Morning Show’

Jon Hamm’s Emmy guest drama actor race for his role in the Apple TV drama “The Morning Show” has hit a roadblock as he has been disqualified due to a clerical error by the studio. Despite his stellar performance as Paul Marks in only three episodes of the show’s fourth season, Hamm was ineligible for the guest actor category under an Emmy rule that prohibits actors previously nominated in lead or supporting categories from competing as a guest performer.

This rule, introduced by the Television Academy in January 2025, has had far-reaching implications for performers who have been nominated for or won lead or supporting acting Emmys. Notable actors like Meryl Streep, who was nominated for supporting comedy actress for Season 3 of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” have also been affected by this rule. However, there seems to be a loophole in the rule when it comes to “Saturday Night Live” guest submissions, where former cast members like Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell can still be considered for guest roles.

The oversight by Apple TV’s team and the TV Academy led to Hamm’s disqualification, with his work in “The Morning Show” no longer eligible for Emmy consideration in the guest actor category. Despite this setback, Hamm still has other opportunities for Emmy recognition, including his role in the Apple show “Your Friends and Neighbors” and his character voice-over performance in the animated comedy “Grimsburg.”

Jon Hamm has a remarkable track record at the Emmys, with 18 nominations across various categories and series, including “Fargo,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and the iconic “Mad Men,” where he won his sole Emmy for lead drama actor in 2015.

Emmy voting is set to conclude on June 22, leaving Hamm and other contenders eagerly awaiting the results. While the disqualification may be a setback, Hamm’s talent and versatility ensure that he remains a strong contender in other Emmy categories.
