Lane Thomas hits grand slam in 1st inning, leads Royals to a 9-2 win over the Reds
The Kansas City Royals ended their six-game losing streak with a dominant 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Lane Thomas set the tone early with a grand slam in the first inning, while Luinder Avila delivered a stellar performance on the mound.
Avila, in just his second career start, pitched a career-high five innings, allowing only one run on two hits. He also recorded a career-high five strikeouts and four walks on 86 pitches. Avila stepped up to fill in for the injured Kris Bubic, showcasing his potential as a valuable asset to the Royals’ pitching rotation.
The Royals’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with Jac Caglianone and Michael Massey adding to the lead with a two-run homer and a solo shot, respectively. Reds’ starter Brandon Leibrandt struggled, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.
On the other side, Reds’ right-hander Lyon Richardson had a rough outing, lasting only one inning and surrendering a grand slam to Thomas. It was Thomas’ second home run of the season and a standout performance for the young outfielder.
Despite the loss, Reds’ left fielder JJ Bleday continued his hot streak with his 10th home run of the season. Highly touted prospect Edwin Arroyo made his MLB debut for the Reds, contributing a hit and showcasing his defensive skills at second base.
Looking ahead, the Royals will send LHP Noah Cameron to the mound to face off against Reds’ LHP Andrew Abbott in the upcoming matchup on Tuesday night.
Overall, the Royals’ victory was a much-needed boost for the team as they look to turn their season around. With strong performances from both the offense and pitching staff, they will aim to build on this win and gain momentum moving forward.
