Man charged with making threatening calls to a Florida Air Force base

A Florida man has recently been charged with making threatening phone calls to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, just two days after a suspicious package was discovered outside one of the gates. It is important to note that investigators have not accused the caller of planting any devices.

The 35-year-old Palm Harbor man was arrested and charged with making the threatening phone call to the base on March 18. According to a criminal complaint filed in Tampa federal court, the man made two phone calls to the base on that morning, during which he made threatening statements to the individuals who answered the calls. These statements appeared to be in reference to the suspicious package that had been found on March 16, prompting officials to lock down the base and issue a shelter-in-place order for several hours.

Authorities were able to trace the caller’s phone number, obtain cell site data, and corroborate the man’s location in the days leading up to the threatening phone call. The criminal complaint also noted that the man has a history of making similar threats in the past. Following his arrest, he was interviewed and then taken to a mental health facility under Florida’s Baker Act, which allows for involuntary detention for up to three days.

The FBI has revealed that the suspicious package discovered at MacDill Air Force Base contained “possible energetic materials,” and further analysis of the package is currently ongoing. MacDill Air Force Base is home to the U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. The base has been on heightened alert since the recent conflict in Iran.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures at military installations, particularly during times of heightened tensions. The safety and security of personnel and facilities must always remain a top priority.
