Michigan synagogue attacker committed ‘Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism’: FBI
The recent incident at a West Bloomfield, Michigan synagogue, where a man armed with fireworks rammed his truck into the building, has been classified as a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism by the FBI. The attacker, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was believed to have targeted the Jewish community and the largest Jewish temple in Michigan.
According to Jennifer Runyan, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, Ghazali was motivated by Hezbollah’s militant ideology and had a clear intention to cause harm. Despite his efforts to kill as many people as possible, he was the only casualty in the attack. Fortunately, no one inside the synagogue was injured, although several law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the incident.
Leading up to the attack, Ghazali displayed concerning behavior. He had been researching local synagogues and attempting to acquire a gun. After failing to do so, he purchased an AR-style rifle, ammunition, and fireworks. He also searched for information on Israeli gatherings and tried to cover his tracks by deleting his search history.
On the day of the attack, Ghazali posted ominous messages on social media and communicated his intentions to commit a mass terrorist act. Tragically, his family members had been killed in an Israeli airstrike just days before, which likely fueled his desire for revenge.
Ghazali’s violent actions culminated in the destructive attack on the synagogue, resulting in a fire that engulfed the building. Despite the chaos, no one inside, including the children at the preschool, was harmed. Ghazali ultimately took his own life during a confrontation with security guards.
While the FBI could not confirm Ghazali’s direct ties to Hezbollah, they believe he was influenced by their ideology. U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon stated that Ghazali’s actions would have likely resulted in charges of providing material support to Hezbollah if he had survived.
This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism and the importance of vigilance in identifying and preventing such acts. The swift response of law enforcement officers prevented further harm, but also highlights the need for continued efforts to combat extremist ideologies and protect vulnerable communities.
