NYC crime plunges — with murders at all-time low — as NYPD boss reveals plan to keep streets safe for summer

The latest crime stats released by the NYPD indicate that New York City is experiencing a significant decrease in major crimes, making it safer than ever before. In the first four months of the year, overall major crime has dropped by 9.5% across all five boroughs. Notably, the number of murders in April reached an all-time low, with only 19 reported incidents, surpassing previous records set in 2014 and 2017. The year-to-date total of 76 murders also marked a decrease from the previous year’s number of 86.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited the historic drop in crime to the department’s focused efforts on combating gang violence and illegal gun activities. Staten Island notably has not recorded a single homicide this year, showcasing the effectiveness of the NYPD’s strategies in maintaining public safety.

While the overall crime rates are showing positive trends, there has been a slight increase in reported rape cases, up by more than 10% compared to the same period last year. This rise is attributed to a change in the state law in 2024 that expanded the definition of rape.

Despite this increase, other crime categories have shown promising declines. Shootings, transit and public housing crimes, and retail thefts have all decreased in the current year. The ongoing trend of decreasing crime rates began over a year ago and continues to show positive results.

In April, the city saw significant drops in various crime categories. Burglaries were down by 21.5%, auto theft decreased by 20.2%, and robberies dropped by 13.8%. Felony assaults also decreased by 6% during the month. Retail thefts saw a notable 17.7% decrease in April compared to the previous year.

The Bronx, which had previously seen an increase in crime rates, experienced the largest declines so far this year. The borough recorded a 15.5% decrease in murders compared to the same period last year. In April, the Bronx reported the fewest murders in history, with only four incidents.

Hate crimes also saw a reduction in April, with a more than 35% decrease citywide. The NYPD is implementing a Summer Violence Reduction Plan to maintain the positive trend in the upcoming months. This plan involves deploying as many as 3,800 officers to 72 patrol zones in 40 precincts, public housing projects, and the subway system.

Overall, the NYPD’s efforts in focused policing, recruitment, and strategic deployment of resources have contributed to the significant decrease in crime rates across New York City. The department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents as the city prepares for upcoming events during the summer months.
