Pete Alonso frustrated by his ‘unacceptable’ slow Orioles start after Mets exit
Pete Alonso is expressing his frustration with his slow start in Baltimore. The Orioles’ first baseman had another disappointing night at the plate, going 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in a 6-4 loss to the Giants. Alonso made it clear that he expects more from himself, stating, “This is not my standard. Results-wise, yeah, it’s unacceptable for me, and I will be better.”
Alonso, known for his power hitting, has struggled in the early part of the season. In 57 plate appearances, he is batting just .176 with one home run and two doubles. The slugger acknowledged the expectations placed on him and vowed to improve, saying, “I’m here to win. And I expect more out of myself, and I know other people do as well. The best is obviously going to come. And I will be better.”
Throughout his career, Alonso has been a consistent home run hitter, earning five All-Star selections and hitting at least 34 homers in each full season since his debut in 2019. Last season, he had a strong performance with the Mets, posting a .272 batting average with 38 home runs and receiving his first Silver Slugger award.
Alonso made a significant move in the offseason, signing a lucrative five-year, $155 million deal with the Orioles after leaving the Mets. The expectations were high for Alonso and the Orioles, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 season where they finished 75-87 after two consecutive playoff appearances.
As a team, the Orioles currently hold a 6-7 record, and Alonso is determined to turn things around and live up to the expectations placed on him. With his track record of power hitting and determination to succeed, Alonso is poised to make a strong impact for the Orioles as the season progresses.
