Randolph Mantooth, best known for his role as paramedic Johnny Gage on the iconic 1970s TV series “Emergency!”, passed away on July 9 in Ventura at the age of 80.
Mantooth rose to fame in 1972 when he landed the role of Johnny Gage on “Emergency!”, a groundbreaking show that introduced the concept of paramedics to the public. Starring alongside Kevin Tighe, Mantooth portrayed Gage for six seasons on NBC, often performing his own stunts.
According to reports from the Hollywood Reporter, Mantooth passed away in a hospice facility after battling a long illness. Throughout his career, Mantooth continued to advocate for firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs, even reprising his role as Johnny Gage on other series like “Adam-12”.
Following his success on “Emergency!”, Mantooth transitioned to soap operas, appearing on popular shows like “Loving” and “General Hospital”. He also made guest appearances on a variety of primetime series, including “Dallas”, “Charlie’s Angels”, and “The Love Boat”, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Born in Sacramento to a father of Cherokee and Seminole descent, Mantooth pursued his acting career after studying at Santa Barbara City College and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He made his television debut on shows like “Ironside”, “The Virginian”, and “Marcus Welby, M.D.” before landing his breakout role on “Emergency!”.
In 2015, Mantooth was diagnosed with cancer, but he continued to work in the industry until his passing. He is survived by his wife Kristen and siblings Donald and Tonya, leaving behind a legacy as a talented actor and advocate for first responders.
