Rep. Hank Johnson welcomes incoming socialists as Pelosi refuses to comment

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., found themselves avoiding questions about the rising influence of the socialist movement after three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured victories in primary elections.

The political power of Mamdani was evident on Tuesday night as all three House candidates he backed — Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, and Claire Valdez — emerged victorious in the Democratic primaries in New York, defeating more moderate Democrats.

Pelosi, known for her moderate stance, chose not to respond to Fox News Digital’s inquiry about her thoughts on the success of these socialist candidates. Although she did not formally endorse Mamdani, Pelosi did support a socialist candidate in 2024 — Dean Preston for California’s District 5 supervisor. In a 2019 interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, she stated that she would “reject socialism as an economic system” and emphasized that it did not represent the views of the Democratic Party.

Similarly, Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the progressive Squad, remained silent on questions regarding the New York primary results and the potential impact of the three socialist candidates on House Democrats and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ agendas if they were to be elected to Congress. While Omar has not explicitly identified as a socialist, she has advocated for policies associated with socialism and received support from the Democratic Socialists of America.

On the other hand, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., welcomed the newly elected lawmakers, expressing optimism about their participation in the Democratic caucus. Johnson dismissed criticism against the candidates for their views on Israel, arguing that they were critical of the Israeli government rather than Israel itself. He emphasized that the candidates’ opposition was aimed at the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he accused of leading Israel into a war with Iran.

The primary winners have all been vocal critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, highlighting the growing influence of progressive ideals within the Democratic Party. Lander, who is Jewish, emphasized in his victory speech that criticism of Israel does not equate to anti-Semitism and that one can oppose Zionism without being anti-Semitic.

Johnson also condemned the relationship between Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump, attributing their actions to escalating conflicts in the region. He called on the people of Israel to correct the mistakes made by their government, similar to how Americans had the opportunity to rectify the election of Trump.

In conclusion, the victories of the socialist candidates endorsed by Mamdani in the New York primaries have stirred debate within the Democratic Party, reflecting the diverse ideological spectrum present within the party. The influence of progressive ideals on key policy issues, such as relations with Israel, underscores the ongoing evolution of the Democratic platform.
