Robert Mueller, former FBI director and special counsel, dies at 81
Robert Mueller, the renowned former FBI director and special counsel who led high-profile investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, has passed away at the age of 81, as confirmed by his family. Mueller’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
The FBI Agents Association also expressed their condolences, highlighting Mueller’s significant contributions to the bureau’s ability to combat national security threats while upholding its core investigative mission. Similarly, the WilmerHale law firm, where Mueller was a partner, praised his exemplary leadership, integrity, and dedication to public service.
Mueller’s illustrious career began with his service in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he received multiple accolades for his bravery. After his military service, Mueller pursued a career in law, working as a U.S. attorney in various cities and at the Department of Justice. His notable cases included investigating the Gambino crime family and prosecuting individuals involved in the Pan Am Flight bombing and the regime of Manuel Noriega.
In 2001, Mueller was appointed as the director of the FBI by President George W. Bush, a position he held for 12 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the bureau’s shift towards counterterrorism efforts post-9/11. Mueller’s no-nonsense approach earned him respect among his colleagues and agents.
Following his tenure at the FBI, Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election. The investigation led to several indictments of key figures associated with the Trump campaign. In his report, Mueller found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
President Trump’s response to Mueller’s passing sparked controversy, with his remarks being criticized by lawmakers for lacking respect and decency. Senators from both parties expressed their condolences for Mueller’s passing, acknowledging his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
