Ronny Mauricio’s late homer leads Mets past Angels for win to start May
The New York Mets were able to snap a two-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, thanks in part to a tiebreaking home run by Ronny Mauricio in the seventh inning. Mauricio, who recently became the Mets’ starting shortstop due to an injury to Francisco Lindor, showcased his raw power with a 111.3 mph exit velocity on the home run.
The Mets received a solid outing from Christian Scott, who allowed three runs (one unearned) on three hits with eight strikeouts over five innings. Scott struggled with control in his season debut but showed improvement in this game. The bullpen took over from there, with Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams combining to close out the game and secure the win.
The Angels jumped out to an early lead with a two-run homer by Jorge Soler in the first inning. Scott also ran into some trouble in the third inning when a throwing error allowed the Angels to score their third run. However, the Mets fought back in the sixth inning, loading the bases and eventually tying the game on Marcus Semien’s two-run single.
In the end, Mauricio’s home run proved to be the difference-maker, giving the Mets the lead and ultimately the win. The team will look to build on this victory and continue their push towards the playoffs.
