Secret compartments conceal millions of dollars in deadly drugs as Border Patrol arrest dozens

Drug traffickers attempted to outsmart authorities by concealing narcotics in a vehicle’s roof, but their plan was foiled by US Customs and Border Protection officers who made two significant busts in April, seizing nearly $3 million worth of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The first bust occurred at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on April 19, where officers stopped a 27-year-old Mexican national driving a 2019 Honda Pilot. A scan of the vehicle revealed something suspicious hidden above the cabin, which was confirmed by a CBP canine team. Upon tearing into the roof, officers uncovered 94 hidden packages containing approximately 35 pounds of fentanyl powder valued at nearly $2 million, along with over 80 pounds of methamphetamine worth around $80,550. The driver was arrested and now faces federal charges for drug trafficking.

Just days earlier, on April 13, officers at the same crossing intercepted another shipment hidden inside a vehicle’s rear quarter panels. A 20-year-old Mexican citizen driving a 2025 Toyota Corolla was flagged after a canine alerted authorities. Upon inspection, officers found six packages containing 14.02 pounds of fentanyl powder, valued at $764,727. The suspect was also arrested, and federal prosecutors have taken over the case.

San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin commended the CBP officers for their dedication in preventing dangerous narcotics like fentanyl and methamphetamine from reaching the streets. The enforcement efforts come amid President Donald Trump’s leadership on border control, with officials reporting historically low apprehensions along the southwest border and a decrease in fentanyl seizures.

In Southern California, enforcement activity remains intense, with the San Diego Field Office reporting significant seizures of contraband, narcotics, and numerous arrests. At the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, officers intercepted over 158 pounds of methamphetamine, indicating that traffickers are still attempting bold smuggling tactics despite increased border security measures.

Overall, the crackdown on drug trafficking at the border showcases the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to keep dangerous substances off the streets and protect communities from the devastating impact of drug abuse.
