Stowers homers, López has 40th multi-hit game as Marlins beat Mariners 2-0 for 5th straight win

The Miami Marlins continued their winning streak with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night at LoanDepot Park in Miami. Kyle Stowers started the game off strong with a leadoff home run in the second inning off Mariners pitcher George Kirby. The Marlins added to their lead in the third inning when Xavier Edwards hit an RBI triple, scoring Otto López who had reached base with a single.

Tyler Phillips got the start for the Marlins and pitched five solid innings, allowing only four hits on 71 pitches. The Marlins bullpen, led by Cade Gibson and Michael Petersen, shut down the Mariners offense to preserve the shutout. Pete Fairbanks entered the game in the ninth inning and closed it out for his 13th save of the season.

Otto López continued his impressive season, collecting two hits in the game to increase his batting average to .345. López now has 126 hits before the All-Star break, tying a Marlins record set by Luis Arraez in 2023. He also became the first player since Jose Altuve in 2014 to have 40 multi-hit games before the All-Star break.

In a bit of bad news for the Marlins, slugger Owen Caissie had to leave the game in the second inning due to right calf tightness. Caissie, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Wednesday, is tied for second on the team with 12 home runs.

Looking ahead, the Mariners will send RHP Bryce Miller to the mound in an effort to avoid a three-game sweep by the Marlins. Miller has a 4-2 record with a 1.71 ERA this season. The Marlins will counter with RHP Janson Junk, who has a 3-5 record with a 4.80 ERA.

The Marlins’ victory marked their fifth straight win and improved their record to a major league-best 25-8 since June 1. Fans can follow all the latest MLB news and updates on the official AP MLB website.
