Tarik Skubal takes ‘great step’ in recovery from elbow surgery, throws third bullpen session
Detroit Tigers star pitcher Tarik Skubal continues to make progress in his recovery from elbow surgery, as he completed his third bullpen session on Thursday. Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, underwent a non-invasive procedure on his left pitching elbow on May 6 to remove a loose body. His latest bullpen session took place before the Tigers’ home game against Cleveland.
Manager A.J. Hinch expressed optimism about Skubal’s performance in the bullpen, calling it a “great step” in his rehabilitation process. However, Hinch refrained from providing a specific timeline for Skubal’s return to the mound, emphasizing the importance of clearing hurdles along the way.
During the bullpen session, Skubal showcased his full arsenal of pitches, throwing a total of 35 pitches and taking breaks in between to simulate inning breaks. Hinch noted that Skubal’s velocity was impressive, reaching levels not seen since the start of his throwing program. The left-hander even simulated a second inning, demonstrating encouraging signs of progress.
Skubal will accompany the Tigers on their upcoming series in Baltimore and is scheduled to throw another bullpen session. Following this session, the team’s medical and coaching staff will evaluate his condition and determine the next steps in his recovery plan.
So far this season, Skubal has posted a 3-2 record with a stellar 2.70 ERA in seven starts. As a free agent after the season, his return to the Tigers’ rotation is eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike.
