The Simple Trick to Reset Your Momentum Before Q3 Slips Away

I sat there this morning, staring at the steam rising off my coffee, and it hit me like a ton of bricks: we’re already here.

The calendar flipped, the fireworks from the Fourth are a memory, and suddenly, the third quarter is staring us right in the face. It’s that weird time of year where the "new year energy" has long since evaporated, the summer heat makes everything feel a little sluggish, and if you aren’t careful, you start drifting.

You know the drift. It’s that subtle feeling where you’re still working hard, maybe harder than ever, but you’re not actually moving. You’re just treading water in a very expensive suit.

I looked at my dashboard this morning and realized that if I didn't make a move right now, Q3 wasn't going to be the launchpad for a strong finish; it was going to be the place where my momentum went to die.

Listen, I’ve been there. I’ve led teams and companies through seasons where we were all "busy," but nobody was actually winning. We were just checking boxes. And if you’re the person everyone leans on, that drift doesn't just affect your bottom line, it eats away at your peace.

So, let’s talk about how we fix it. Right now. Before the quarter slips away.

The Myth of "Working Harder"

We’ve been sold a lie. The lie is that when momentum stalls, the answer is more volume. More meetings. More emails. More "hustle."

But here’s what I’ve learned: You can’t out-hustle a lack of clarity.

If you’re driving a car with a misaligned front end, flooring the gas pedal doesn't get you to your destination faster; it just wears out your tires and makes the eventual crash a lot more spectacular.

Most leaders I talk to don't have a work ethic problem. They have a "noise" problem. They have too many priorities, too many voices in their ear, and too many "good" opportunities that are standing in the way of the great ones.

The simple trick to resetting your momentum isn't adding more to your plate. It’s the exact opposite.

The Simple Trick: The "Stop-Start-Continue" Audit

If you want to move on purpose, you have to get clear on what’s actually moving the needle. I call this the "Momentum Reset," and it’s a practice I do every time I feel that mid-year fog rolling in.

It’s not a 50-page strategic plan. It’s a 15-minute conversation with yourself (and maybe your team) that cuts through the noise.

1. What are we STOPPING?

This is the hardest part for high-achievers. We hate quitting. But leadership isn't about doing everything; it's about choosing the right things.

Look at your Q2 activities. What took up 80% of your time but only gave you 20% of your results? Maybe it’s a weekly meeting that has devolved into a social hour. Maybe it’s a client who pays the least but complains the most. Maybe it’s a "strategic initiative" that sounded great in January but is clearly a dead end in July.

Write it down. And then, this is the key, actually stop doing it. Give yourself permission to let it go. You need that energy for the climb ahead.

2. What are we STARTING?

Now that you’ve cleared some space, what’s the one move you’ve been putting off?

Momentum is built on small wins. What is a "quick win" you can execute in the next 30 days that would prove to your team (and yourself) that you’re back in the driver’s seat?

Maybe it’s finally launching that podcast. Maybe it’s a new outbound sales strategy. Maybe it’s just a weekly 10-minute huddle to keep everyone aligned. Pick one thing. Not five. One.

3. What are we CONTINUING?

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. What worked in the first half of the year? Where did you see sparks of brilliance?

Double down on those. If your referral network is what kept the lights on in Q1 and Q2, don't ignore it to chase some shiny new TikTok trend. Fuel what’s already burning.

The Power of Clarity and Purpose

When you do this audit, something interesting happens. The weight starts to lift.

Clarity is the ultimate fuel for momentum. When you know exactly what you’re doing, and more importantly, why you’re doing it, the "heavy responsibility" of leadership starts to feel a lot lighter.

I’ve spent a lot of my career as a business development mentor, and I’ll tell you the secret: the most successful people I know aren't the ones with the most ideas. They’re the ones with the most discipline. They have the discipline to stay focused on the mission when everyone else is getting distracted by the shiny objects of Q3.

You have to move on purpose. If you don't define your quarter, the noise will define it for you. Your inbox will define it for you. Your competitors will define it for you.

Your One Move for Today

I don’t want you to just read this and think, "Yeah, JR is right." I want you to make a move.

Right now, grab a notepad or open a blank doc. Don't wait until the next meeting. Don't wait until you’ve had another cup of coffee.

Write down one thing you are going to stop doing today.

Maybe it’s checking your email the second you wake up. Maybe it’s saying "yes" to every coffee "ask" that comes through LinkedIn. Whatever it is, kill it.

Then, decide on your one big goal for Q3. Not your "KPIs" or your "deliverables." What is the one thing that, if you achieve it by September 30th, will make you look back and say, "We won"?

Come Home Intact

The goal of ByrdOlogy isn't just to help you make more money or build a bigger company. It’s to help you do those things while keeping your soul intact.

I see too many leaders who win the quarter but lose their peace. They hit the numbers, but they’re too exhausted to enjoy the life those numbers were supposed to build.

Resetting your momentum is about more than just productivity. It’s about protection. Protecting your time, your energy, and your focus so that you can lead with confidence and come home to your family with something left in the tank.

The third quarter is a marathon, not a sprint. But even in a marathon, you have to know when to pick up the pace and when to adjust your stride.

Consider this your mid-race adjustment.

Get clear.
Move on purpose.
And let’s finish this year stronger than we started.
