The Wombles Franchise Set for Revival as the Blair Partnership Boards
The beloved British animated characters, The Wombles, are making a comeback to enchant a new generation, thanks to a consolidation of the brand’s intellectual property rights and the appointment of The Blair Partnership as its exclusive global representative.
Originally created by Elizabeth Beresford in the 1960s, The Wombles are eco-conscious furry critters who reside in burrows where they collect and recycle trash. While Beresford’s stories primarily focused on the British branch of The Wombles residing on Wimbledon Common in London, she also mentioned Wombles living in various countries around the world.
The Wombles gained significant popularity through the BBC stop-motion series that aired in the 1970s, which introduced the iconic theme tune. The franchise saw further adaptations in the 1990s through a Canadian animated company, later acquired by WildBrain, which produced three more seasons and a trio of one-off specials.
With the rights now consolidated under a single ownership structure with global protection, The Wombles are gearing up for a new content slate and international development. This includes plans for licensing, gaming, publishing, and live experiences aimed at both nostalgic fans and new family audiences.
To spearhead this expansion, Wombles Operations Ltd has appointed The Blair Partnership to oversee worldwide rights and commercial strategy across various platforms such as television, film, publishing, digital media, and consumer products. Neil Blair, founding Partner at The Blair Partnership, expressed optimism about the brand’s potential for international growth and the creation of a multi-platform franchise for a new generation.
As part of the partnership, new content will be rolled out through digital and interactive channels, including the launch of an official Wombles YouTube channel featuring original episodes and new live-action formats. Additionally, plans are in place for an interactive digital game, audio productions with celebrity casts, and a range of storybooks and publishing formats.
In line with The Wombles’ commitment to environmental stewardship, the strategic re-launch also involves the expansion of the Wombles Community Charity. The organization coordinates litter-picking, recycling, and education initiatives across the UK, engaging over 250 community groups and 50,000 volunteers. The charity’s message for 2026, “Be More Womble,” encourages individuals to give back to their communities, with initiatives like recycling non-infectious clinical waste into training equipment for NHS hospitals in Sussex.
The reimagined Wombles franchise joins a prestigious lineage of iconic British children’s characters, cementing its place among the likes of Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Harry Potter, and Peppa Pig. With a fresh approach and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, The Wombles are poised to captivate audiences worldwide for years to come.
