Top Oversight Dem demands info from Reflecting Pool contractors overseeing renovation
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall has been a source of controversy following the completion of a renovation project under the Trump administration. The renovation, which cost taxpayers over $16 million, has been marred by issues such as algae growth and peeling paint. In response to these concerns, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Robert Garcia of California, has sent letters to the contractors responsible for the renovation, requesting information such as contracts and water quality records.
Garcia expressed his disappointment with the project, calling it a “disastrous renovation” and criticizing President Trump for prioritizing vanity projects over the needs of the American people. He called on the contractors to provide answers regarding the failures of the project.
The contractors hired to paint the reflecting pool and remove the algae have been asked to provide details about the scope of their work, contract performance standards, communications with the National Park Service, and amounts invoiced or paid. The deadline for providing this information is set for July 8, 2026. However, as Democrats do not have subpoena power, the contractors are not legally obligated to comply with the request.
In a recent development, Trump announced plans to drain the Reflecting Pool for “permanent repair” around the Fourth of July. He also claimed that six people have been arrested for alleged damage to the site, although no charges have been filed in connection with these arrests. The Interior Department and the U.S. Park Police have yet to provide evidence of the alleged vandalism.
The controversy surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in government-funded projects. As investigations continue and more information comes to light, it remains to be seen how the contractors and government officials will address the issues raised by Rep. Garcia and other critics.
