Travis Kelce in lawsuit fight with sneaker company ahead of Taylor Swift wedding
Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, found himself embroiled in legal troubles just days before his wedding to pop sensation Taylor Swift. According to TMZ, Kelce and his teammate Patrick Mahomes are facing a lawsuit in New York federal court from the shoe company 1587 Sneakers over the naming of their steakhouse, 1587 Prime.
The lawsuit, filed in September 2025, alleges that 1587 Sneakers trademarked “1587” before Mahomes and Kelce did. The company started using the number combination on shoes and markings in April 2023 but only applied for the trademark in October 2025, as reported by ESPN.
The significance of the number “1587” stems from the first landing of Filipino sailors in America. Kelce and Mahomes, who named their steakhouse after their jersey numbers, applied for the “1587 Prime” trademark in 2023. The trademarks fall under different categories, with the Chiefs players in the bar and restaurant industry while the shoe company operates in clothing.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben weighed in on the case, stating that trademarks can coexist in different industries. However, the identical nature of the marks raises questions about potential confusion among consumers. 1587 Sneakers also claims trademark infringement due to the steakhouse selling merchandise in addition to food, leading consumers to believe there is a connection between the two entities.
Despite the legal battle, Kelce has been keeping busy this summer. He recently signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Chiefs and tied the knot with Taylor Swift in a star-studded wedding at Madison Square Garden on July 3. The event was attended by NFL luminaries such as Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, adding to the excitement surrounding Kelce both on and off the field.
