Trump pledges rapid U.S. aid for Venezuela after deadly earthquakes

President Donald Trump has pledged to provide assistance to earthquake-stricken Venezuela after two powerful tremors rocked the country’s northern coast, causing widespread destruction in the capital city of Caracas. The back-to-back earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in flattened buildings and triggered a state of emergency in Venezuela.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed his readiness to help Venezuela and instructed government agencies to prepare for swift action. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed that the U.S. was in contact with Venezuelan authorities and was mobilizing assistance for the nation.

Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, declared a state of emergency and reported a significant loss of life and injuries. The U.S. State Department has deployed a disaster assistance team and task force to provide critical aid, including search and rescue teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian resources.

The U.S. Geological Survey issued red alerts through its PAGER system, warning of the potential for high casualties and significant economic impact. Despite the challenges, Rodriguez expressed gratitude for the support from the Trump administration and other countries like China, Brazil, and Qatar, which have sent humanitarian aid and rescue teams to Venezuela.

The earthquakes have highlighted the seismic activity in Venezuela, located at the intersection of the Caribbean Plate and the South American Plate. The U.S. response to the disaster reflects a shift in diplomatic relations with the Venezuelan interim government, led by Rodriguez.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the War Department would play a crucial role in the disaster assistance efforts, especially as the earthquakes damaged Caracas’ airport. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. response would be substantial, rapid, and effective, despite setbacks to stabilization efforts in Venezuela following previous interventions.

Furthermore, the U.S. has maintained a significant presence in Venezuela’s oil industry, controlling the country’s oil exports since earlier interventions. The Council on Foreign Relations estimates a substantial increase in U.S.-controlled oil exports to Venezuela, with limited transparency and oversight in the arrangement.

The collaboration between the U.S. and other nations in providing assistance to Venezuela underscores the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis. The reconstruction and recovery efforts in Venezuela will require ongoing support and resources to help the country rebuild and recover from the devastating earthquakes.
