Ty Simpson never even spoke with Sean McVay before strange Rams’ NFL draft decision

The Los Angeles Rams made a surprising move by selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson as the No. 13 pick in the NFL draft. However, it was revealed that Simpson had not spoken with head coach Sean McVay or general manager Les Snead before the draft, adding to the awkwardness of the situation.

Simpson mentioned that his interactions with the Rams before the draft were brief, only meeting with some scouts at Alabama. He expressed his excitement to meet Snead and get to know McVay now that he is part of the team.

Interestingly, the Giants took a different approach by extensively interviewing top quarterback prospects before the draft. In contrast, the Rams relied on their scouts and tape reviews to make their decision on Simpson.

Despite mixed opinions from experts on Simpson’s draft position, the Rams saw potential in him as a future quarterback. Snead revealed that he had spoken to Simpson’s father, Jason, who is a head coach at UT Martin, before the draft process.

During a press conference after the pick, McVay’s body language and comments raised questions about his enthusiasm for the selection. While praising Simpson’s demeanor, McVay seemed more reserved compared to his usual demeanor.

Some have speculated whether McVay would have preferred a player who could contribute immediately to a team aiming for a Super Bowl run. However, McVay emphasized that the team still belongs to Matthew Stafford and that Simpson will provide valuable depth at the quarterback position.

Overall, the Rams’ decision to draft Simpson without extensive pre-draft conversations shows their confidence in his abilities and potential for the future. It will be interesting to see how Simpson integrates into the team and develops under McVay’s guidance.
