U.S. pushes its AI in China and Asia after Trump-Xi meeting
The United States is actively promoting American technology in Asia, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), in order to compete with China’s efforts to develop cheaper alternatives. Casey K. Mace, a senior official for APEC and economic policy, emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to promoting U.S. AI options and solutions during the APEC trade ministers’ meeting in Suzhou.
In response to China’s advancements in technology, the U.S. has imposed restrictions on Chinese access to advanced U.S. chips, and Beijing has banned major American tech companies like Google and Facebook. Despite these challenges, Mace highlighted that U.S. tech companies will be participating in workshops at an APEC “digital week” event in Chengdu, where they will engage with all 21 APEC economies.
While Mace did not disclose specific U.S. companies participating in the event, he expressed confidence that they would be able to expand their market access in China. The U.S. is not explicitly advocating for American tech over Chinese alternatives, but rather focusing on promoting U.S. technology and solutions in the region.
China is hosting this year’s APEC trade ministers’ meetings, with a focus on promoting U.S. AI in areas such as food traceability, genome sequencing, and biotech. The recent meeting between President Trump and President Xi in Beijing has contributed to a positive tone in discussions about the safe development of AI between the two countries.
Ryan Fedasiuk, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, emphasized the importance of distributing American compute globally to compete with Chinese tech giants. He also highlighted the need for coordination between the U.S. and China to screen vendors of DNA synthesis services to prevent future pandemics.
Overall, the U.S. is actively engaging with Asian economies to promote American technology and solutions, while also navigating the challenges posed by China’s technological advancements. The collaboration between the two countries on AI development and other tech initiatives will be crucial in shaping the future of technology in the region.
