UN nuclear chief urges strict Iran checks in any deal to end war
The importance of verifying Iran’s nuclear activities has been emphasized by the head of the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi. He stressed the need for “very detailed” measures to be included in any potential U.S.-Iran agreement to end their war in the Middle East.
Grossi highlighted the crucial role of a thorough verification regime for Iran’s nuclear program, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of a second round of talks with Iran in the coming days.
The Trump administration has made it clear that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is a top priority. Despite Iran’s claims that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons, the country has been resistant to limitations on its nuclear program.
Recent talks between the U.S. and Iran failed to yield an agreement, with Iran’s nuclear ambitions being a major point of contention. However, an Iranian diplomatic official denied that the negotiations faltered due to this issue.
Grossi emphasized the necessity of IAEA inspectors having access to Iran’s nuclear facilities to ensure compliance with any agreement. He stated that detailed verification mechanisms are essential for any agreement on nuclear technology.
Iran’s refusal to grant the IAEA access to facilities damaged during a previous conflict has raised concerns about the country’s nuclear activities. The IAEA’s inability to verify the suspension of enrichment-related activities and the size of Iran’s uranium stockpile further complicates the situation.
While Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful, the IAEA and Western nations have raised suspicions about past nuclear weapons development. Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, which is close to weapons-grade levels, has raised alarms about the country’s nuclear capabilities.
Grossi has warned that Iran’s current uranium stockpile could potentially be used to build multiple nuclear bombs if weaponized. The IAEA guidelines recommend regular verification of highly enriched nuclear material to ensure compliance.
In conclusion, the verification of Iran’s nuclear activities remains a critical issue in ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Iran. The inclusion of detailed verification measures in any agreement is essential to ensure transparency and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
