Woman shot while walking near the Magnificent Mile
A terrifying incident unfolded on Monday evening at one of the busiest intersections along Chicago’s iconic Magnificent Mile. A woman became an unintended victim of a gunman who was targeting someone else nearby, resulting in a chaotic scene that left a man’s car riddled with bullets and caused a three-car collision on the bustling commercial strip.
The shooting took place around 9:27 p.m. in the first block of East Chicago Avenue, just west of Michigan Avenue. A 22-year-old man was driving a red sedan when someone in a white sedan pulled up and opened fire on his vehicle. While the driver of the red sedan escaped unharmed, a 25-year-old woman walking in the vicinity was struck in the left thigh by a stray bullet. She was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is currently in fair condition.
Witnesses provided conflicting accounts of the incident, but most described the gunman as a Hispanic man seated in the back seat of the white sedan. As of Monday night, no arrests had been made, and the investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
This unfortunate incident marks the third shooting on the Near North Side so far this year, a slight decrease from the six shooting victims reported at this time last year. In 2024, there were four shooting incidents by this date, including an exchange of gunfire involving a police officer and a gunman. The Chicago Police Department continues to work diligently to address gun violence in the city and ensure the safety of its residents.
