YouTube taking steps to make clear when realistic videos are made by AI

YouTube Updates Policies to Identify AI-Generated Content

YouTube has announced a significant update to its policies in order to more clearly distinguish videos that have been created using artificial intelligence. This decision comes in response to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content across social media platforms.

As part of the new policy, Alphabet-owned YouTube will now prominently display a label on videos that have been altered or generated using AI. This label will be placed directly below the player for long-form videos and as an overlay for shorter content, ensuring that viewers are aware of the video’s origin.

Creators on YouTube are already required to disclose their use of AI for realistic content, and the platform is introducing tools to automatically identify and label AI-generated material. The goal is to provide transparency to viewers while allowing creators to maintain control over their content.

“If it looks real but was made with AI, viewers will know immediately,” said Rene Ritchie, a YouTube creator, emphasizing the importance of transparency in content creation.

It is worth noting that the disclosure label itself will not impact how a video is recommended or whether it can be monetized. YouTube is striving to strike a balance between transparency and creator autonomy through these changes.

Following YouTube’s initiative, other major online content platforms are also taking steps to address the proliferation of AI-generated content. In April, Spotify introduced a certification badge called “Verified by Spotify” to indicate whether a song was created by AI or a human artist, providing listeners with more insight into the music they consume.
