7 killed and dozens injured following series of weekend shootings in Chicago

The city of Chicago has been plagued by a recent surge in shootings, resulting in 38 injuries and seven deaths since Friday evening, according to police reports. This wave of violence has prompted President Donald Trump to once again advocate for a military intervention in the third-largest city in the United States.

In a Sunday morning post on Truth Social, Trump expressed frustration at the lack of action from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, questioning why he had not sought assistance. Trump claimed that he could transform Chicago into a safe city within a short period, emphasizing his belief that his intervention could significantly reduce crime rates.

Governor Pritzker, a potential Democratic presidential contender for 2028, has consistently rejected Trump’s calls for military intervention in the past. Under Trump’s administration, National Guard troops were deployed in other Democrat-led cities such as New Orleans, Washington D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, for crime-fighting missions.

While data from the Chicago Police Department shows a slight increase in shooting incidents compared to the previous year, overall violent crime rates have been decreasing in the city over the past few years, aligning with national trends. Despite the recent spike in shootings, Chicago has made progress in reducing overall crime rates.

Reports from Chicago police indicate that there have been at least two dozen shooting incidents since Friday evening, resulting in several fatalities. Victims include a 21-year-old shot in the chest on Sunday, an 18-year-old shot in the armpit on Saturday evening, and a 50-year-old shot in the chest on Friday.

One particularly alarming incident occurred on Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., where a group of 12 people on a Chicago street were shot by individuals in an SUV. The victims, ranging from 17 to 47 years old, were hospitalized for their injuries, with one man refusing medical treatment for unknown injuries.

The violence on Juneteenth overshadowed a momentous occasion as former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to his presidential center on the South Side of Chicago. The city’s Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the act of violence, emphasizing that such incidents have no place in the community.

As Chicago grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, city officials are committed to holding those responsible for the violence accountable. The community is mourning the loss of lives and working towards creating a safer environment for all residents.
