Detectives questioning migrant in murder of Loyola student: sources

A tragic incident has shaken the Loyola University community as Venezuelan migrant is being questioned in connection with the murder of freshman Sheridan Gorman at the Loyola Beach pier. The 25-year-old suspect was apprehended at an apartment building on North Sheridan Road, where a firearm was recovered and is currently undergoing testing to determine if it was the weapon used in the crime.

Reports suggest that the shooting was unprovoked, with Gorman and her friends simply out to take pictures when they encountered the suspect on the pier. Wearing a ski mask or face covering, the suspect fired a single shot, striking Gorman. Initially reported as a gunshot wound to the head, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed that she died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Investigative efforts led detectives to the suspect through video footage from multiple cameras, ultimately tracing him back to the Sheridan Road apartment building. Residents of the complex identified him from the footage, and the proximity of the building to the crime scene further solidified his connection to the case.

As of now, no charges have been filed against the suspect. However, court records indicate that he had a prior arrest for shoplifting at Macy’s in 2023, with a warrant out for his arrest since August of that year. Gorman, a promising student from Yorktown Heights, New York, had aspirations of majoring in business at Loyola University.
