New Google tool allow users to scrub more personal data to keep safe from online thieves
Google recently announced a new update to its “Results about you” tool, aimed at helping users protect their sensitive personal information from scammers. The tool now allows users to remove even more personal information from search results, including passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security numbers, in addition to phone numbers, emails, and home addresses.
This update comes at a crucial time, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported receiving 3 million fraud reports in 2025, resulting in a loss of $15.9 billion to scammers. Identity theft can have devastating consequences for victims, as scammers can use stolen information to commit various fraudulent activities, such as obtaining loans, medical care, government benefits, or even implicating the victim in criminal activities.
The new feature is currently rolling out to US English users first and can be accessed through the Google App or a web browser. Users can visit myactivity.google.com/results-about-you for a step-by-step guide on how to use the updated tool. Additionally, there is a faster process for removing non-consensual explicit images, with the option to opt-in to safeguards that will filter out similar explicit results in future searches.
To remove explicit images, users can simply click on the three dots on an image, select “remove result,” and choose “It shows a sexual image of me.” These features are currently available for users over the age of 18. Users can also request the removal of personal information for individuals under the age of 18 through a detailed removal request form, which initiates the removal process immediately upon submission.
Google’s continued efforts to enhance user privacy and security are commendable, especially in a digital landscape rife with potential threats from scammers and identity thieves. By providing users with tools to control and protect their personal information, Google is helping to create a safer online environment for everyone.
