Stepbrother pleads not guilty to murder, sex abuse charges in teen’s cruise ship death

A 16-year-old boy facing charges as an adult for first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse in the tragic death of his stepsister during a family cruise has entered a plea of not guilty, according to court records. The teenager was scheduled to appear in court in Miami for his arraignment but opted to waive his appearance, as stated in a filing by his legal representative.

The Department of Justice unveiled the charges last week following the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner in November on the Carnival Cruise ship Horizon while en route to Miami. Prosecutors allege that the stepbrother sexually assaulted and intentionally killed Kepner, who succumbed to mechanical asphyxiation, according to officials.

Anna Kepner’s father, Chris Kepner, is married to the suspect’s mother, Shauntel Kepner. In a statement released last week, Chris and Shauntel expressed profound devastation over the loss of Anna and emphasized the ongoing grief surrounding this incomprehensible tragedy. They described the situation as deeply painful and complex for their entire family, affirming their unwavering commitment to honoring Anna’s memory and legacy each day.

The Kepner family remembers Anna as a vibrant, straight-A student with a promising future ahead. They are focused on cherishing her life and ensuring that her spirit lives on despite the heart-wrenching circumstances they now face.
