Chase DeLauter’s 2-run single, Williams’ strong start propel Guardians past Rays 3-1 to snap skid
The Cleveland Guardians secured a much-needed victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, ending a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win. Chase DeLauter played a crucial role in the victory, delivering two hits and driving in two runs. Pitcher Gavin Williams put on an impressive performance, allowing just one unearned run while striking out nine batters in 7 2/3 innings.
The Guardians’ offense was bolstered by Brayan Rocchio, who contributed three hits and scored two runs in the game. This strong offensive showing helped Cleveland avoid being swept in the three-game series against the Rays.
Tampa Bay, which had been on a six-game winning streak, suffered its first loss in seven games by allowing more than two runs. Despite Chandler Simpson’s two hits for the Rays, the team was unable to overcome the Guardians’ pitching and defense.
Gavin Williams, with a record of 5-1, showcased his dominance on the mound by becoming one of only four pitchers in the majors this season to pitch at least seven innings in three starts. He gave up five hits and did not issue a single walk in this impressive outing.
Cade Smith closed out the game for the Guardians, earning his seventh save of the season. The combination of solid pitching and timely hitting allowed Cleveland to secure the much-needed victory.
In the fifth inning, Rocchio capitalized on an error by the Rays’ first baseman to get on base, setting up DeLauter to drive in two runs with a sharp single. Rocchio had earlier scored the Guardians’ first run in the third inning on Kyle Manzardo’s sacrifice fly.
Tampa Bay managed to score a lone run in the seventh inning after a throwing error by Cleveland’s rookie second baseman, Travis Bazzana. Despite this minor setback, the Guardians’ pitching staff held strong to secure the win.
Looking ahead, the Rays will open a six-game homestand against the San Francisco Giants, with Shane McClanahan set to start on the mound. The Guardians, on the other hand, will enjoy an off day before facing off against the Oakland Athletics in a three-game series, with Joey Cantillo taking the mound for Cleveland.
Overall, the Guardians’ victory over the Rays was a much-needed morale boost for the team, providing a strong foundation to build upon as they continue their season.
