Ted Turner, media tycoon who founded CNN, dies at age 87
Ted Turner, the iconic media mogul known for founding CNN and leading a vast empire that included cable channels like TBS, TNT, and Turner Classic Movies, as well as ownership of the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, passed away at the age of 87. Turner’s company, Turner Enterprises, confirmed his peaceful passing after a long battle with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder he had revealed he was fighting in 2018.
CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson paid tribute to Turner, describing him as an intensely involved and committed leader who was fearless and always willing to trust his own judgment. Turner’s impact on the world of media and news was profound, with CNN standing as a testament to his pioneering spirit. President Trump also acknowledged Turner’s contribution to broadcast history, although he criticized the current stewardship of CNN, a network that Turner had sold in the past.
Turner was a man of many facets, known for his adventurous spirit and deep pockets. He made headlines as the skipper who brought the America’s Cup back to the U.S. in 1977, devoted acres of land to save the American bison, and changed the news landscape with the launch of CNN in 1980. Despite his larger-than-life persona, Turner was also known for his off-color remarks and nicknames like the Mouth From The South and Captain Outrageous.
In a candid interview in 2018, Turner disclosed his battle with Lewy body dementia, a mild form of Alzheimer’s that he was facing. Throughout his life, Turner was married three times, with his most notable marriage being to actor and activist Jane Fonda. Fonda, in a heartfelt Instagram post, described Turner as a deeply romantic and swashbuckling figure who had a lasting impact on her life.
One of Turner’s greatest legacies was his dedication to conservation and wildlife preservation. He saved numerous natural habitats by buying and protecting vast tracts of land, showcasing his commitment to being a caretaker of the environment. Turner’s impact on the media landscape and his passion for protecting the planet will be remembered for years to come.
In reflecting on his life, Turner’s message was clear – we don’t own anything, we simply borrow it for a while. His legacy as a media pioneer, conservationist, and visionary will continue to inspire future generations.
