Logan Square bar manager training new hires gets unexpected lesson in burglary prevention

A Repeat Burglar Strikes Again in Logan Square

A repeat offender, Ron Humphrey, found himself back in the spotlight after being charged with breaking into a Logan Square bar just three weeks after his last burglary incident. According to court records, Humphrey has a history of burglaries and theft convictions, making this latest offense even more alarming.

The 32-year-old was first apprehended on April 2 after allegedly using a crowbar to break into a 7-Eleven store on South Racine Avenue in the early hours of the morning. He managed to steal a cash register containing around $88 before attempting to take a second register. However, his plans were thwarted when an employee triggered a holdup alarm, leading to Humphrey being discovered hiding under a car in a nearby parking lot.

Despite his initial arrest, Humphrey was released, only to miss his court appearance on April 9, resulting in a warrant being issued for his arrest. With the warrant still pending, Humphrey allegedly targeted Federales Tacos & Tequila on North Milwaukee Avenue on April 23. Armed with a crowbar, he attempted to force his way into the office area but was swiftly apprehended by police after the manager, who was on the phone with 911, alerted authorities.

What made this arrest possible was the quick thinking of the bar manager, who had stayed late to train new employees. Upon hearing the motion alarm, he locked himself in the office and observed Humphrey entering the premises with a hoodie, surgical mask, and crowbar in hand.

Following his arrest in the Federales case, prosecutors sought to have Humphrey detained, but Judge Rivanda Doss Beal opted for electronic monitoring instead. However, Humphrey was detained for violating pretrial release conditions in the 7-Eleven case and remains in custody for that violation.

Records show that Humphrey has a troubling criminal history, with multiple burglary convictions in 2014 and 2019, as well as a felony theft conviction in 2017. His repeated offenses raise concerns about the effectiveness of the justice system in dealing with habitual offenders like him.

It is crucial for the community and law enforcement to work together to address the issue of repeat offenders like Humphrey and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent further crimes.
