Catholic deacon mauled to death by bear left touching final voicemail for dad
A tragic incident unfolded at Montana’s Glacier National Park when Catholic deacon Anthony Pollio, 33, was mauled to death in a suspected bear attack during a hike along the Mt. Brown Trail. His body was discovered roughly 50 feet off the trail with injuries consistent with a bear attack, although a formal autopsy is pending.
Anthony had left a heartfelt voicemail for his father, Arthur Pollio, as he embarked on the hike to watch the sunset. Arthur described his son as a fearless individual who had been on a two-week road trip with a friend before parting ways in Montana. Anthony, an experienced hunter, likely encountered an aggressive bear unexpectedly during the hike.
When not exploring parks or preaching at his local Catholic church in Florida, Anthony enjoyed cruising around the state and engaging in outdoor activities. He had graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in hospitality and had embarked on various hiking adventures before the tragic incident in Montana.
Prior to Glacier National Park, Anthony had visited iconic locations such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, Starved Rock State Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. His father expressed pride in his son’s adventurous spirit and the rich experiences he had accumulated in his 33 years of life.
The incident marks the first deadly bear attack in Glacier National Park since 1998, with the last bear-related injury occurring in August 2025. The park authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Anthony’s death. The community mourns the loss of a vibrant and adventurous soul who met a tragic end during his passion for exploration and outdoor activities.
