Talarico walks back comments on religion and gender after Paxton’s win
Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee in the pivotal U.S. Senate race in Texas, is facing scrutiny over his past comments on religion that have been weaponized by his opponent, Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton. Talarico recently addressed these comments in an interview on ABC News Live, attributing Paxton’s focus on them to a tactic of diversion and disunity.
In response to questions about his 2021 statement that “God is non-binary,” Talarico explained that his intention was to spark conversation and challenge traditional beliefs about the nature of God. He emphasized that his remarks were not meant to offend but rather to shed light on the complexity of divine existence. Talarico accused Paxton of using these comments to detract from his own history of corruption.
The Republican campaign against Talarico has also highlighted his views on transgender rights and immigration, portraying him as a radical candidate unfit for Texas. This strategy echoes previous tactics used in political campaigns, such as the Trump campaign’s effective attack ads in the 2024 presidential race.
Despite the attacks, Democrats believe that Talarico’s appeal to a broad spectrum of voters, including independents and disaffected Republicans, could secure him victory in the Senate race. Paxton, on the other hand, has faced ethical and personal challenges, including a contentious impeachment trial and a divorce filing by his wife citing “biblical grounds.”
Republican leadership, initially hesitant to fully support Paxton, has now rallied behind him as the nominee. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has endorsed Paxton and criticized Talarico as a far-left liberal. The Senate Majority PAC, which previously supported Sen. John Cornyn in the primary, has shifted its focus to opposing Talarico.
In an effort to bridge political divides, Talarico has reached out to Trump supporters and Cornyn voters, emphasizing inclusivity in his campaign. While Cornyn has not explicitly endorsed Paxton, he has pledged to support the Republican ticket in the upcoming election.
As the Senate race in Texas heats up, the clash between Talarico and Paxton underscores the broader battle for political control and ideological supremacy in the state. With both candidates vying for support across party lines, the outcome of this race could have far-reaching implications for Texas and the nation as a whole.
