Massachusetts HS lacrosse team forfeits playoff game over cigar photo — parents claim they were fake

The Ipswich High School boys lacrosse team found themselves in hot water after a celebratory photo with cigars led to the forfeiture of their state semifinal game. The controversial photo, which showed eight players with cigars in their mouths after graduation, sparked outrage due to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s strict policy against tobacco use.

Despite claims from some parents that the cigars were not real and were simply props made from banana leaves, chamomile, and cigar wrappers, the school decided to disqualify several players from the crucial semifinal game against Cohasset. This decision left the team with a shortage of eligible players, leading to the unfortunate forfeiture.

Parents of the banned players expressed frustration over what they perceived as a disproportionate punishment for what they believed to be harmless celebration. One parent even went as far as providing evidence to the school that the cigars were not real, but the decision had already been made.

The school released a statement explaining the situation and expressing disappointment over the missed opportunity to compete in the state semifinals. Despite efforts from board members to advocate for the players, the MIAA’s rules on tobacco use ultimately led to the team’s disqualification.

The incident highlights the strict regulations surrounding tobacco use in high school sports and the consequences that can arise from even the appearance of violating these rules. While the players may have had innocent intentions, the zero-tolerance policy on tobacco forced the school to take action.

Moving forward, it serves as a reminder for student-athletes to be mindful of their actions, even in moments of celebration, to avoid jeopardizing their eligibility to compete. The repercussions of this incident may have been severe, but it underscores the importance of upholding the rules and regulations set forth by athletic associations to maintain fairness and integrity in high school sports.
