Rory McIlroy fires back at US Open heckler with big-belly gesture

Rory McIlroy had an interesting encounter with a heckler at the U.S. Open, and he responded in a way that showed his quick wit and sense of humor. As he was teeing off with Maverick McNealy on Saturday at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a fan started shouting, “Bunker! Get in the bunker!” while filming the moment on his phone.

Instead of ignoring the heckler, McIlroy decided to play along. As he walked towards the fairway, he looked at the fan and jokingly made a belly gesture with his hands, poking fun at the heckler’s apparent weight.

Golf tournaments are typically known for their respectful atmosphere, and some, like the Masters, even ban the use of phones to prevent disruptions like this. However, at the U.S. Open, it seems that some fans take advantage of the freedom to voice their opinions, even if it means heckling the players.

According to a Reddit post, the same fan who heckled McIlroy was also heard yelling at other players throughout the tournament. One fan reported hearing the heckler shout, “get in the water,” while Wyndham Clark was putting, leading to speculation that the fan was seeking attention and trying to create viral moments.

Despite the distractions, McIlroy finished the tournament tied for 32nd place at 3-over, while Wyndham Clark secured a wire-to-wire victory with a score of 4-under.

During the tournament, McIlroy also showed his frustration with his performance. At one point, a microphone picked up his expletive-laden reaction to a poor shot, where he exclaimed, “Just go home, Rory f–king hell.”

After Clark’s win, he expressed disappointment with the late finish of the event, which resulted in fewer fans present for crucial moments. He noted that the lack of spectators made the atmosphere feel “a little flat,” and he hoped for a better turnout in future tournaments.

Overall, the U.S. Open provided plenty of drama and excitement, both on and off the course. Despite the distractions and challenges faced by the players, they showcased their skills and resilience, making it a memorable event for golf fans around the world.
