Body believed to be Kansas City highway shooting suspect found in flooded basement more than a week after police standoff

Kansas City police have made a significant breakthrough in the case of the highway shootings that occurred recently. It is believed that they have found the body of the suspected gunman, Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, inside the burned basement of a family member’s home. Sanchez-Munoz, 22, was wanted for a series of shootings, including one that resulted in the death of Jeremy Keenan.

The body was discovered by family members in the basement of the Independence, Missouri home. The clothing worn by the body matched that of Sanchez-Munoz, who was believed to have escaped during a fire that broke out during a standoff on June 16. Law enforcement had previously searched the home but found it difficult to thoroughly search the cluttered and water-filled basement.

Captain Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police described the basement as one of the most congested he had ever seen, with piles of debris making it nearly impossible to navigate. The stairwell leading to the basement had collapsed in the fire, further complicating the search efforts. It took a significant amount of manpower to clear the debris and locate the body, which was hidden from view under the clutter.

Homicide detectives and the Jackson County Medical Examiner are now investigating to confirm the identity of the body and determine the cause of death. The investigations are still ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragic shootings.

Sanchez-Munoz’s shooting spree left Keenan dead and another individual seriously injured. Several other victims, including an Uber driver, were also wounded but are expected to recover. The shootings prompted a nationwide manhunt for Sanchez-Munoz, who was believed to be struggling with mental health issues according to his family.

The tragic events have shed light on the importance of mental health awareness and access to proper treatment. Keenan’s mother expressed her understanding of Sanchez-Munoz’s struggles and emphasized the need for individuals to seek help when dealing with mental health issues. The community is left mourning the loss of Keenan and hoping for justice to be served in this heartbreaking case.
