California police bust South American burglary crew accused of targeting luxury homes

Six South Americans, including several minors, were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a string of home burglaries that have plagued California neighborhoods over the past year. The suspects, identified as Andres Zarate, 32, Darlyn Alejandra Acosta Serrano, 32, and four 17-year-old minors, were taken into custody on charges of burglary and conspiracy by the Irvine Police Department.

It is still unclear whether the arrested individuals were operating independently as a burglary ring or were part of a larger criminal network, as reported by the LA Times. Police Chief Michael Kent emphasized the department’s dedication to the safety of the community and their commitment to holding criminals accountable for their actions.

Through extensive surveillance and evidence gathering, law enforcement was able to identify the suspects, leading to their arrests in various locations across the state, including Bellflower, Huntington Beach, and Los Angeles. The crew is believed to be responsible for more than 10 residential burglaries in Irvine neighborhoods, although it remains uncertain if they are connected to the burglary tourism trend, where foreign nationals travel to the US to commit break-ins.

In recent years, there have been similar incidents involving South American nationals targeting homes in different California cities. In 2024, a Chilean national targeted homes in the Pacific Palisades and East Hollywood, while multiple Colombians were arrested in Burbank last year. Detectives are currently investigating whether the arrested suspects are linked to any additional crimes.

The Irvine Police Department’s successful operation serves as a reminder that crime will not be tolerated in the community. The authorities have the necessary technology, resources, and expertise to track down and apprehend those who engage in criminal activities. The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to uncover any potential connections to other criminal incidents.
